The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #114 Lynn Valley has been serving Veteran’s and the Lynn Valley community for the past 90 years.

We were granted our Charter from the Canadian Legion of the British Empire Service League on December 24, 1930.

The first meeting of the new Legion Branch #114 was held on December 28, 1930 in the District Hall of the Municipality of North Vancouver on Lynn Valley Road (where the Lynn Valley Care Centre now sits).  We continued holding our meetings/functions there until we leased the Institute Hall beginning on June 1, 1932.   Unfortunately, the Institute Hall was destroyed by fire on June 5, 1933 after which we continued to occupy a portion of the second floor of the District Hall.

In 1945, the members of the Legion began a fundraising campaign in order to purchase land and build a new permanent home for the Branch.   We purchased our present lands from the Corporation of the District of North Vancouver on June 4, 1948 for the sum of $400.00.

In July of 1951, after raising funds for the previous 3 years, ground was broken and construction of the building we occupy today began. The next year, the building was officially dedicated on September 28, 1952.  All labour for construction was provided by member volunteers.

The Lynn Valley Legion and its members have continued to support Veteran’s and their families and contributed to the Lynn Valley community since that time.

In 1959, the Legion formed the charter of the original Lynn Valley Little League.  Now operated as a stand-alone League, it just celebrated its 60th anniversary last year.

The Branch has a long history of supporting the North Van Kinsmen Carnival, Lynn Valley Days and was an original sponsor of the celebrated Lynn Valley Days Gala.

The Legion proudly sponsored a smoke detector/fire alarm installation program with the North Vancouver Fire Departments during the early 2000’s ensuring that all seniors were safer in their homes.

In 2003-2004, the Legion initiated a Memorial Brick program which was incorporated into the Veterans Plaza in front of the refurbished North Vancouver Museum and Archives located in the old Lynn Valley elementary school on Institute Road.  The Memorial Brick program allowed Lynn Valley residents to commemorate their family members who served in the Canadian Armed Forces.

In 2014, Lynn Valley Legion participated in the efforts to erect and dedicate a new war memorial in Whey-ah-Wichen/Cates Park. This undertaking was in partnership with the Tsleil Waututh First Nation, the Federal and Provincial governments, the District of North Vancouver and spearheaded by our Branch member, Mick Webb.  This beautiful Memorial is enjoyed today by all and is a gathering place for an additional Remembrance Day service held by the Burrard Yacht Club and the residents of the Seymour/Deep Cove area.

We work in partnership with other community organizations such as Lynn Valley Lions, Lynn Valley Community Association, Lynn Valley Services Society, NS Disability Resource Centre, Sharing Abundance and Lynn Valley Masonic Lodge to provide for the needs of the community at large.

As guardians of the Poppy and the Poppy Campaign and Trust, every November 11th the Lynn Valley Legion coordinates and holds a Remembrance Day ceremony within Lynn Valley, ensuring that families, seniors, youth, able bodied and differently abled persons are given the opportunity to remember those who gave their lives in service to their country.

In the past 10 years alone, we have given back to Veteran’s and the local community to the tune of $1,000,000 through our Poppy Trust and Gaming funds.  We continue to support Veteran’s and their families and the seniors in our community through our Poppy Trust fund.  We continue to support local sports organizations, Scouts Canada, Girl Guides of Canada, local PAC’s, LV Soccer Association and many other youth and service organizations within Lynn Valley and North Vancouver with our Gaming funds.
